Colorado Wedding Planner: How much? Planning for alcohol at your wedding

Posted by on May 15th, 2014

So, you’re having a wedding! And you want to serve alcohol. Finally a fun part of wedding planning! Also, confusing, and potentially expensive.  Questions about alcohol (what kinds? how much? where do I buy it?) are some of the questions I get asked the most by my clients, because if you’ve never thrown a party for a hundred or more people, all of a sudden providing them with libations can feel overwhelming.

Whether you’re just budgeting or actually purchasing it on your own, the tough part is deciding what to serve and how much of it.  Fortunately, the numbers that will help you plan already exists.  And I tried to make them pretty 🙂

On average, your of-age guests who partake in the activity of drinking alcohol will drink one alcoholic beverage per hour of your reception (or event) for a reception taking place on a weekend evening.  Keep in mind that this is on average.

You typically know your guests well enough to know whether or not that statistic will ring true for them.  For example, when my husband and I got married we had about 1/4 of the guests who didn’t drink, 1/4 who we knew would drink under that average, and about half that we knew would blow that average out of the water…as in double or triple that…so we made adjustments in our numbers to account for that.

Here’s how the servings of different alcoholic beverages break down, in prettier form:

I would suggest talking to your bartender and asking him or her to use a jigger (alcohol measuring cup) to get the most bang for your buck on alcohol.

What kinds of alcohol should you offer?  Let me say first that you do not have to serve a full bar, it is perfectly acceptable to offer just beer and wine or beer, wine, and a signature drink.  At it’s most basic, a full bar is two beers (one light, one darker), red wine, white wine, champagne, vodka, gin, whiskey, tequila, rum, and basic mixers.

As for where to shop, in Colorado I generally recommend Applejack Liquors, Costco, or Argonaut Liquors. That said, local wine stores are fantastic, and while they may not keep large quantities on hand, are probably going to be totally happy to special order a few cases for you. You’ll also probably get more personalized service, which may make up for the discounts you might otherwise get from the mass-quantity sellers.  Also, always ask if you can return any unopened bottles.

I hope this helps you solve all of your wedding day drinky dilemmas!

There is nothing that beats a blanket of snow, a warm fire, and a wedding!  I’ll always have a special place in my heart for winter weddings. Deedee and Konrad got married at Timber Ridge, on top of Keystone Mountain in late February, and it was spectacular!  A HUGE thank you to Joe Kusumoto of Joe Kusumoto Photography for sharing these lovely photos.

Winter wedding advice from a Breckenridge wedding planner

Posted by on November 11th, 2013

picture of weddingWinter weddings are so special; they always feel incredibly intimate and magical.  As a wedding planner from the Rocky Mountains, I have a few tips for all of you winter brides:

The most important thing to remember when planning a winter wedding is the weather!  We all know that winter can turn harsh without much warning and if you’re not prepared it can spell disaster for your nuptials.  When you begin planning, think of every possible scenario (snow, wind, transportation etc.) and think of a plan in case those elements come into play.  If you’ve got a contingency plan in place you will not have to stress on your big day.

When it’s cold outside, especially if it’s snowing, guest comfort becomes a heightened concern.  You want your venue to be warm and cozy, but not stuffy.  Ventilation is key!

Another way to ensure your guests comfort in the winter months is by greeting them with a warm drink when they arrive, like hot chocolate or a warm spiced wine.  Consider having pashminas (you can order them online for about  $2.oo) in a basket or hanging on the backs of chairs for guests who catch a chill.

Go heavy on candlelight!  The warm light candles provide is perfect for a winter wedding.

Last but certainly not least is winter wedding fashion!  Winter weddings give brides an opportunity to use fun accessories like scarves, cardigans, boots and faux fur boleros.  Put a wintery twist on a classic bridal look!

Copper Mountain Wedding Planner: Deone & Rod

Posted by on June 20th, 2013

Deone and Rod were joined by close friends and family in an intimate ceremony and reception in Copper Mountain last March.  The bride was stunning in her white fur shrug and the groom was equally dashing!  We had a crazy morning after we discovered the groom had left his pants at home!  Rod wanted to wear his jeans but Deon said “not a chance”  in the end we were saved by Fisco Fun and Formal.  The rest of the day went off without a hitch!  The ceremony was at the beautiful Copper Mountain Chapel and the reception was in the georgous ski in/ski out Beeler house.  A big thank you to Trig and Char of  Trystan Photography for capturing the magic of this day!

Keystone Wedding Planner: Allison & Michael

Posted by on April 1st, 2013

When Allison said yes to Michael’s proposal she was made an official member of the “James Gang”.  Not as scary as it sounds!  The gang consists of Michael and his four amazing children.  Allison rocked it in cowboy boots and the “James Gang” entered the reception Gangnam style.  A big night of dancing and family fun ensued!  Allison and Michael are beautiful people inside and out–thank you to Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva for capturing it all on film!
